I have to confirm the location and date to have the defense, but other than that I’m nearly ready to show off all of my work! I would like to have the defense during the week of November 15th in the main Art building on campus. Ideally the images will be hung in the hallway of the Art building on the first floor. It’s a perfect location because of the track lighting and the opportunity for a lot of people traveling through to view the work. I’ve decided how I want to display the images as well. I’ll be grouping the framed images of JoAnn and Marie on one wall with a statement about my experiences with them, who they are, etc. The other wall will be similarly organized, with framed photos of my time with Margaret and a statement about her. Even though this is an exhibition of the images I’ve made for the project, I want to group them in a way that they function as two separate pieces: JoAnn and Marie, and Margaret. I want the frames and the hanging of the frames to bring the images together, unifying the different images into one body, so that the work is almost an installation of framed photographs, and not just a series of photographs spread along the walls.

After much deliberation over location and presentation, Vaughn and I have found a way to have the exhibition in the Wathena Temple Fine Arts Building gallery. My plan of presenting the photographs grouped together as two pieces didn’t look how I thought it would. It would be such a cool idea for another project! Basically, the photographs I made have a very different personality spread out in a traditional manner than grouped tight together in different sizes. This series in particular needs to be displayed more traditionally spaced in order for the viewers to get the full impact of the work. That being said, the Art Building hallway doesn’t have enough wall space for what I am planning now. I considered using the photography hallway for the exhibition, but the lighting is horrible. We have no gallery, and I can’t let people view the photographs in dingy lighting. I wanted to have to work up for as long as possible, but a little bit of finagling got me the Wathena Temple gallery space for next week. I’m excited! Now I have plenty of room to spread the work out.
More about the presentation of the photographs: I’m on a tight budget so I talked to Vaughn about different ways I could present the photographs other than the traditional matte and frame method. Vaughn talked to me about making floating photographs- supporting the photographs with backing board so that the viewer only sees the image and a border around the image, with no matte or frame required. The only other thing the viewer will see are clips holding the photograph to the backing- because we aren’t going to glue the image to the board behind it. Vaughn seems to really like the idea and I am excited because it is a much more cost efficient method. These are the reasons behind why I am now presenting in this method. I want the viewers to see the photographs in the cleanest and least distracting way possible. I don’t want to have frames that will add to or take away from the photographs. What you see is what you get. I can’t wait for everyone to see the exhibition! I am so happy with how everything has turned out.
